With September being “Pain Awareness Month,” the Kansas City Regional Arthritis Center is co-sponsoring 10 free forums on chronic pain that is aimed at helping people diagnose the source of their pain.
The forum – titled “Focus on Pain … Have You Considered Fibromyalgia?” – will be presented in each of the 10 counties served by the Kansas City Regional Arthritis Center. Those counties are Bates, Carroll, Cass, Clay, Henry, Jackson, Johnson, Lafayette, Platte, and Ray.
The focus of the forum is fibromyalgia, a syndrome that produces widespread pain, tenderness at specific points on the body, disturbed sleep, and general exhaustion. A confusing and often-misunderstood condition, fibromyalgia affects about 2 percent of the U.S. population.
Topics of the forum include chronic pain, medication, advocacy issues, and others. Participants will receive refreshment, educational materials, a free fibromyalgia kit, and information about community classes and courses. Prizes will also be available.
Interested participants are encouraged to call 816-932-2351 for locations and times.
The forum is co-sponsored by the Kansas City Regional Arthritis Center, the Arthritis Foundation, the Area Agencies on Aging, National Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and Fibromyalgia Association, and the American Pain Foundation.
